This lighthouse is 3 miles away on the westernmost Loggerhead Key of the Dry Tortugas. It was commissioned by Congress in 1856 and first illuminated on July 1, 1858 in an attempt to create safer passage through these reef-laden waters. Wrecks had become far too common in this dangerous area of the Caribbean and this lighthouse played a key role in alleviating some of those dangers.
