An important figure for the city Brig was Kaspar Stockalper vom Sturm who in the 17th century built the Stockalper Castle, the Sebastian chapel, the Jesuit college and accompanying church. Even today these buildings are Brig‘s trademarks. Stockalper developed a trading route from Brig over the Simplon Pass known later as the Stockalperweg which brought prosperity and repute to the inhabitants.
