The Igreja de São João Evangelista is a magnificent specimen of a Mannerist prayer house of the 17th century. The Church has a collection of carved gold altar pictures and also has an impressive large organ and eight gold-plated chapels that are decorated with azulejos. The highlight is the chapel of the eleven thousand virgins.
