I remember living here as a boy, my father worked for Ecchinswell House which is opposite as a farm worker and this was the house that went with his job in those days. The owner then was Mr & Mrs H. C. Bevan.

I am researching my mother's family tree - she dies last year and it appears that she lived at Chestnut Cottage, Ecchinswell in 1949. I have a copy of her first marriage certificate which shows that she lived there with her first husband George Axe. He is shown as a farm worker on the certificate. However I know nothing more about George Axe as my mother never mentioned it to me. I hope this is of help. If you have any information which might help me I would be grateful to hear. Thanks.

CHESTNUT COTTAGE WAS STANDING IN THE EARLY 1960S, AS IT IS THE VERY FIRST PLACE IN ECCHINSWELL WHERE WE MET ANYBODY. HAVING DRIVEN DOWN FROM SCOTLAND TO VISIT MY GRANDPARENTS AT WOODLEYS, TO WHERE THEY HAD MOVED IN 1961, MY FATHER AND I STOPPED HERE TO ASK WHERE WOODLEYS WAS, AS THE VILLAGE HAD SEEMED TO HAVE 'PETERED OUT' AFTER THE POST OFFICE END, AND WE DID NOT REALISE IT WAS SUCH A LONG, SCATTERED, PLACE! MR AND MRS STEVE GREEN LIVED HERE, AND WERE INSTRUMENTAL IN US FINDING MY GRANDPARENTS' HOUSE - I WELL REMEMBER MRS GREEN LEANING OUT OF A WINDOW AND GIVING DIRECTIONS. (AS FATE WOULD HAVE IT, IN 1973, DAVID AND I MOVED TO KINGSCLERE, WHERE OUR NEXT-DOOR NEIGHBOURS WERE RAY AND JOAN GREEN - YES, MR AND MRS GREEN'S SON, & DAUGHTER-IN-LAW!)
PS: THIS COTTAGE WOULD NEVER BE PULLED DOWN TODAY!
