I don't know if you can help me but I am a Macmillan volunteer supporting an old lady of 92 with Alzheimers and she talks about her childhood at White House Farm in Eccinshall all the time and wonder if you have any photos of it the family name was Tames.

I have a photo of the original church at Digweeds, which came from the Kingsclere archive, but I don't have a scanner. I do have a spare copy if you would like it.

CATHY - In reply to your query re-'Tasker' caps on Ecchinswell Old Graveyard wall.....they were the manufacturers of these items. The company was based in Andover, and made various forged items - trailers for vehicles (lorries) being just one, I remember.....

My grandfather Henry Herbert Digweed born 1883 in Ecchinswell.
Has anyone got any information on the Digweed family.

I am amazed that I can't find any pictures of the legendary 'elephant' topiary at Elephant Cottage. Everybody seems to remember it even played in its branches, but sadly no pictures!

Mom,I & sister lived on the farm down a lane in Ecchinswell. I believe the farm was owned by a Judge Atkins or Atkinson? Mom cooked for them,also Mr.West looked after chickens. Mr Joe & Peg Hayes lived in a house outside of the farm. Would love to see a picture of that farm if anyone has one. We went to school in Ecchinswell.We lived on a lane that I believe is no longer used & led out to a main highway. Sang in the church at Christmas as I was an angel that year. Now 65 thank you for all the pics here. Confused with the Royal Oak as I thought that was a grocery store there.

Re picture of Ecchinswell School. Looking again, it is probably 1870 not 1850. This is confusing because my relatives had moved away by that stage. I wondered if there are any names of teachers etc. If you would like a copy please e-mail at phil.monk@ntlworld.com

Referring to the previous comment, does the writer actually mean 1850 for the date of the school photograph? Bearing in mind that is a very early date in photography.....Also, I fear most people who could identify anyone in an 1850 photograph will be long gone a century-and-a-half (and more) later. Neverthe less, it would still be an interesting picture to see......Yours in anticipation.

I have a school photo of Ecchinswell class of 1850 which you are welcome to have a copy of. I would be interested if anyone could identify any of the people. My GGG Grandfather lived there for a few years in the 1850s.

Does anyone now anything about Thomas & Roseanna (Rose) Freemantle? Aparantly she ran the Royal Oak at some time in the 1920's or 30's. She died in 1933 aged 100 and according to George Samway's autobiography was very popular in the village. She is my 3x great grandmother. There may be a picture of her somewhere that used to hang in the Royal Oak - in it she is wearing a black pointed hat.

My Grandmother and generations before her were born at Laundry Cottages, Ecchinswell. My Great grandmother x2, Mary Trigg nee Prater was living there in 1901 with her niece Hannah Rolfe, I wonder if you know who the young ladies are in the picture of the cottages?

I lived in Ecchinswell in the late 70's early 80's. Loved it. I just came back last week after a glorious visit to the village. I now live in the USA and remember Peter very well and Clary who worked the bar. I still have friends in the village Dave and Pauline, Shirley Thompson, Jan and Bob. I lived at Fossicks. Stan is no longer I'm afraid to say. What a wonderful part of the world.

I worked in and around Ecchinswell in the late 1960's & early 1970's installing the main drainage system. For part of the time I lived in a caravan opposite The Royal Oak, before the new houses were built. I actually had my 21st Birthday celebrations in The Royal Oak and still have the scars! It was a great place to be and I have fond memories of Peter Woodhouse, Landlord at The Oak, Basil Harfield and his good lady, the Applebeys, Stan Roberts, Bunny & Rosemary Anstie, Mike & Sylvia Hatcher, Dickie Smith, the many Harfields and many more - too numerous to mention. It's really good to see these photos which have brought back many happy memories. I am living in Warminster now and would be pleased to hear from anyone who remembers me from those days! Most of my ancestors (Bendell family) were born in Ecchinswell from 1848 back to 1785. I am hoping to visit the village soon from my home in Cornwall to see if there are any parish records that can help me go further back. bjbendell@aol.com

this is a wonderful collection. Are you Dave Harfield of Ecchinswell? If so please can you contact the school as the children are studying old Ecchinswell this term - Autumn 2006.
