The cannon from Gonzales, was an object of contention between Mexican military and some of the Texas colonists in the Fall of 1835. It is believed to originally been mounted on one of the two blockhouses constructed at Gonzales in 1827. It is also believed that cannons originally served as a visual deterrent to hostile Indians.
It had been buried in a peach orchard during the battle between Mexico and Texas until it could be retrieved and mounted on a pair of cart wheels. It was taken to San Antonio be the artillery company under Capt. James C. Neill. On October 2, 1835 it was requested by the Mexican military that the cannon be returned to them. A flag was made by the Texians and flew over the cannon that read "Come and Take It". They would have to get past the Texian Army to get to the cannon.
