Bald Eagle

Most taken during a trip to Klamath Basin on Christmass 2004. Winter is the best time to see the bald eagles at Klamath as they are there for wintering and are attracted by the aboundant waterfowl. This is a very large bird and can easily catch and kill waterfowl which they feed on at this location. They are quite wary of humans and getting close to them require some patience but from time to time you will find some individus that are more tolerant. They are found in most of North America and prefer large body of water where they can fish and hunt. They usualy dive from the sky and catch the fishes that venture near the surface.

Their powerful talons have approximately 1,000 pounds of pressure per square inch! They can carry their food off in flight, but can only lift about half their weight. Bald Eagles can fly at speeds of about 65 miles per hour in level flight, and up to 150 or 200 miles per hour in a dive. An interesting fact; Eagles can swim to shore with a heavy fish using their strong wings as paddles. However, it is also possible that they can drown if the fish is too heavy for them.
