The small roof like tops on crosses were from the time the crosses were made of wood and such items helped prevent wood from rotting .
This is still a '' working '' graveyard - both catholics and Protestants are buried here . There are still I think nine people alive who are entitled to be buried here - they are in good health - but when they are buried here - excations of parts of the site can then begin .At the monent no such excavations are allowed .

Celtic crosses are a combination of cross - sign of the new religion - christianity - and the old religion -Paganism - , where the circle represnts the Sun which the Pagans woshipped .The Christians took over the old Pagan festivals - eg The feast of Sol Invictus - The Sun God became the Christian Christmas - and the Pagan Spring Festival became the Christian Easter .
