To my utter dismay while walking up toward the entrance (Badaling) of the Great Wall of China, I came across several concrete enclosures that housed these bored, trapped bears. The enclosures did not consist of any greenery or toys in order to stimulate the bears. The only stimulation they had was begging for food from the tourists!

Please visit www.animalasia.org if you would like to make a donation and help with the unethical treatment toward animals that is rampant in Asia.

Dear Ziva, I was once a regular visitor to China and fell in love with the people and the country, which are both wonderful. I thank the gods I didn't share your experience at the Great Wall. Like you I am always confronted when I encounter the mistreatment of animals. The only excuse I can make for the horrendous treatment of animals like bears in parts of China is their enduring poverty in many regions. More power to you for your photography and work toward bringing humane changes.

Best regards

John
