A real cowpoke

Antelope, Oregon

Before too long the Rajneesh juggernaut started bumping up against the local people and challenging their way of life. There was a move to take over the town of Antelope, the closest municipality to the ranch. It eventually succeeded. But before the red-clad newcomers took over, the local people rallied to the cause. Here in the basement of the school house a local rancher digs into a piece of apple pie at a bake sale. I was talking to a nice looking TV reporter lady from one of the networks. The story was big and I think it was the first time she'd ventured beyond the perimeter of Manhattan. She said she'd love to interview this cowpoke but she was afraid he'd be embarrassingly inarticulate. I didn't bother to tell her it was Jay Bowerman, whose family had been running a ranch in the area for over 100 years. His father, legendary U of O track coach Bill Bowerman, was co-founder of Nike. Jay himself was a former coach of the US cross country ski team. But he's not some urban dude dressed up in a cowboy costume, like you see in Santa Fe. He's a real cowpoke.
