Hinault and Saronni

Reno, Nevada

In the old days Americans could only dream of seeing real European bicycle racers. Suddenly, there they were on the streets of Reno, Nevada! Bernard Hinault, and Saronni were two of the greatest of that era. Saronni had recently been world road champ. 1983? His brother also rode on the del tongo team in the Coors. On the Telegraph Hill stage of the race in San Francisco Saronni's brother came charging up the hill and everybody got excited because it was Saronni....only to discover it was the brother. One spectator of intellectual bend said "That was mock Saronni."

Saronni won the Worlds at Goodwood, England in 1982. He was always a hero of mine! That was the year of the LeMond/Boyer finish controversy, where LeMond "chased" Boyer up the finish hill, getting second and "ruining" Boyer's chance at victory. Saronni just blew by everyone regardless.
