Neboder means "skyscraper." This apartment building was about 12 stories and was no longer a skyscraper, but the name stuck. One side was inhabited, the other was under Serbian fire. The people in the photo, most of whom were friends of mine, lived in the upper stories. They had installed wood-burning stoves for heat, lugged water up the long flights of stairs, and did their best to keep the lives of their children as normal as possible.
