Stipe Mesic in San Francisco

San Francisco, California

Mesic visited San Francisco in 1992, undoubtedly to raise money for HDZ. As usual, HSP, "the prave Ustashe," outnumbered all the other political groups 10 to 1 and Mesic spent his time answering goofy questions from clowns who were spending the war fixing flat tires in Daly City.

I've got to make a comment here about camera gear. I love my Canon gear, and I used to love Nikon when I was using that. But one day in the mid-90s I noticed that certain images jumped right off the light table....and they were all shot with Leicas. There is something special about images made with Leitz lenses, and this photo is a pretty good example. I would never guess that Leica quality would show up on a computer screen, but it does. I've had this M3 since 1967. It's been to Leica twice for an overhaul. Besides photographing Mesic, now the president of Croatia, it's photographed Nixon, Ford, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Mark Spitz, Bruce Springsteen, and I forget who else. I still use this M3, and I still carry around a Leica with tri-x. Mostly I use an M6 with a 35mm or 28mm Summicron.
