Sheefish are a staple of the diet here in Northwest Alaska. These fish were caught in a net stretched under the ice on Kobuk Lake, near Kotzebue. I travelled with my neighbor and his sons 17 miles by snowmachine and shot pictures while they pulled the nets and picked the fish. There were 80 fish altogether, weighing an average of 10 lbs. each. My neighbor hunts and gathers subsistence foods for people, especially elders, who have nobody to do it for them. Most of the fish are donated, including one for me and two for my husky Nikki.
