There are about six horses in the Northwest Arctic Borough, most of them owned by musher Ed Iten. All six are icelandics, a horse bred for the arctic. They love frozen, raw fish...these two are nibbling on a hunk of sheefish. Icelandic horses have an interesting history. Anybody who likes horses should do a search on the net and read about them. They are five-gaited descendents of the animals the Vikings took to Iceland. Leif Ericson decreed that no more horses would be imported, and that any Icelandic that left the country would never return. That law has been observed for over 800 years. They often live into their 60s.
