Before they built the Bixby Bridge in 1932, drivers along the coast of California had
to do the mountain crawl along the Old Coast Road. Impassable in wet weather,
excellent vistas of the Pacific Ocean are available at a thousand
feet or so above sea level as well as beautiful, lush redwood forests
forming a canopy over snaking dirt roads.
