Though I know it wasn't the right name, we always called these "banana spiders" in my part of the gulf coast. The ones I am thinking of were more than 2 1/2 " overall, with bodies about 3/4" long. They disappeared from the Pensacola area after Hurricane Ivan. I have often wondered why they haven't made a comeback.
