Looking at pics of the original building, the stairway was designed with no obstructions, so the 2 bannisters on the steps are later additions. The side walls are also boxing in the original stepped sides, and the straight bannister rail has replaced the a series of 4 horizontal, stepped bannister rails that followed the stepped contour of the sides. Less practical perhaps, but the designer's original vision looked better. The original floor, presumably Linoleum (and maybe still surviving under the carpet), featured a Art Deco geometric pattern.
