Buzzards are members of the hawk family, kestrels,merlins&peregrines are members of the falcon family,just as David Cassidy is a member of the partridge family,but he don't fly too good.lol

Jenny, Guest and Coleen are all correct! Birds of the genus Buteo are generally known as Buzzards in the Old World and as hawks in North America.

Is that a gauntlet I see before me? I still think it's a buzzard and there may be transatlantic nomenclature issues here (wow, did I just say that!).
