River Ganga Trip

A set of photos of various places I took while travelling along the river Ganga in India. The Ganga is a lifeline in India, both materially and spiritually. It is considered a goddess and is even worshiped. Of the few places photographed here, the most important is probably the city of Kashi, which is known as Varanasi today. Varanasi is an ancient center of pilgrimage and learning. It was near here that Gautama the Buddha delivered his first sermon. Kashi is also a city of thousands of temples, almost all of which are dedicated to various forms of the Hindu god Lord Shiva. In fact, Kashi is known as Avimukta, or never-foresaken by Shiva. The most important temple in Kashi (and perhaps in all of India) is the Kashi Vishwanath temple, where a Shiva linga is worshiped.
