White Mountain Trail and National Forest, Franconia Notch State Park, Kancamagus National Scenic Byway, New Hampshire

The White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) is a forest contained within the White Mountains in the northeastern United States. It was initially established in 1918. It has a total area of 784,505 acres and is perfect for outdoor activities. From mid-September to mid-October the forest takes on a whole new hue or hues. The White Mountains' peaks are higher than 4000 feet and Mt. Washington at over 6000 feet is one of the strangest mountain peaks in the world. It is here that the fastest ever natural wind (231mph) was recorded on earth.

Franconia Notch State Park lies north of Lincoln on I-93 and is a great place to hike, take a cog train or fly through the air across mountains. Flume Gorge offers a 2 mile hike over covered bridges, waterfalls, scenic pools and magnificent mountain views. It is on Rt, 3, Exit 34A from I-93. The entry fee is $13 but get a Discovery Pass for $24 and it covers the Cannon Aerial Tramway too. The 80 passenger aerial tramway whisks you above timberline to the 4200 foot summit for views into Maine, Vermont and even Canada. Visit the Old Man of the Mountain museum.

We stayed at the Stonybrook Motel and Lodge, run by Gujarati's Mike and Kelly and helped by Mr.Kanti Patel. It was ranked one of the best places to stay in the White Mountains.

The Kancamagus highway is a scenic byway that was completed in 1959 after two dead-end stretches of road were connected, runs from the Pemigewasset River in Lincoln, and along the Swift River from Kancamagus Pass, at an elevation of 2,855 feet (870 m), to New Hampshire Route 16 in Conway. It is by far the most beautiful road we have driven in.

2 days isn't enough in the White Mountains, there certainly is enough to do for 4 days. Plan ahead.

Wish I was there in fall but winter may not be that bad in terms of photographic prettiness, as long as I can bear it long enough to take a photo.
