Savannah, Georgia

On November 17, 1732, James Edward Oglethorpe and 113 colonists left England for America. They came to establish the colony of Georgia. In January 1733, after the ship "Ann" made land in South Carolina, Oglethorpe sailed south to identify the present historic district of Savannah as the area for the new colony.
Savannah is a small, historic city. Thanks to civil engineer, William Bull, the city was laid out as 4 squares, with 8 blocks around each. By 1851, the city had expanded to 24 squares. This well laid out plan makes it easy to walk, see and experience Savannah. The buildings around each square have been preserved well, with extreme care taken to maintain the look and feel of the 18th and 19th century.
The Savannah Historic district is a National Historic Landmark and there is plenty to see. The Savannah river provides a natural border to South Carolina and adds beauty to Savannah, while enabling the city to be one of the biggest ports.
Savannah is a perfect place to spend two to three days. There is also the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge (click here) nearby and is worth a visit.
