Heritage Villages - Pragpur, Garli

Pragpur, is India's first heritage village. The village is set to have been established in the seventeenth century by the Kuthiala sub-caste of the Sood community of the region. Traditionally, the Kuthialas were the treasure keepers of Kangra’s ruling house. The name ‘Pragpur’ is said to have been derived from Pragdevi or Pragrani, a lady who may have been connected with the ruling family of the tract. 'Prag' in Sanskrit also means pollen. Situated about 60 kilometers from Dharamsala, Pragpur, is located at an elevation of around 585 metres in the Kangra District. Pragpur is a perfect base to explore the Kangra area, with its forts, temples and ancient history.

Garli, is a sister village of Pragpur, located around 4 kilometers away. It is older in history than Pragpur, and is also a notified heritage village. The wealth of the village can be seen in the grand but now deserted buildings that adorn the streets of Garli. Though there are local buses from Pragpur to Garli, it is just a pleasant walk away, passing through the smaller vilalge of Muhin.

Hey.. Im shikha,born in garli in 1989.after spending about 3yrs,we moved to hoshiarpur.i still have my extended family staying there,this site has taken me by surprise talab,shivm nmandir..every bit of home is heavan!! however,i would have still appreciated if all the pictures were colored..Pragpur is slow and laid back but a very lively and colorful place,rusty walls of the old forts,colorful houses,colorful temples,the trees and bushes..everything has a story to say..and taking away the colors is being unfair to nature and heritage..like many others i do strongly believe the government should take some serious measures to develop the place and promote tourism and make everyones visit to garli- "an experience of a lifetime" take care all..

Hello,Iam Shikha Sharma .A researcher from himachal Pradesh university . I recently visited Pragpur ,the heritage village Pragpur and had conversation with many localities out there. I dont find a single reason for the villagers to abstain their kids from not going out from the village in search of jobs. The place is miserable and turning into a village of shattered,broken and uninhabited houses which are called heritage houses of Pragpur .Heritage need preservation,conservation ,restoration and this all is lacking out there in Pragpur.Residents who left pragpur years back dont want to come back and if they want to come back that too just for the sake of there ancestral remains .The Heritage Village should have gained pace with time . I saw so many international toursits coming to the place but it seems that the income from tourism just flows in 2-3 hands .The entire community is not benefited from it . Some people are taking the entire benefit . I would like dthis place to develop, progress and integrate with the present standards and lifestyle by maintaing its village ethos and feel. It is time to do something rather than just sitting and feeling proud to be a resident of Pragpur . Pragpur deserves much better than what it is today ......afterall it is the First heritage village of India .

Indeed I have spent all my holidays in pragpur as a child when the family would visit and stay in winter from shimla . I have very fond memories of those days when we would move to pragpur for the winter. Present generation of people may not be knowing about some great persons who belonged to GARLI. RAI BAHADUR Mohan Lal Sood was an advocate who got a Britisher convicted, during the British rule for killing a poor Indian.His many charitable projects still exist in Garli. MAHATMA GANDHI, when visited Shimla in connection with talks about INDEPENDENCE of India used to stay in the house of Rai Bahadur. His nephew Lala Mela Ram Sood, afterwards used to look after the arrangements of GANDHi Ji whenever he would visit Shimla. Mr. Justice Sanjay Karol (Sood), presently a judge of Himachal Pradesh High Court also belonged to Garli. He happened to be the youngest ADVOCATE GENERAL so far to be appointed in any high court of India.

I am Kusum Sharma.My parents are from Bani near Garli.I was a student of Girls schoolGarli . I passed out in 1973 Hr sec part1. I miss the grand old school days. Ours was the best school and I have still very vivid majestic memories of the school builindings , Classroom etc. Gurpreet Kaur daughter of our legendry teacher couple Deols was my best friend.We had the best of teachers and strict headmistess E Gopaldas. It was nice to see pictures of Garli I belong to Bani and after primary i went to Garli (Boys) school . I have many sweet memories of Garli school. I really think it was the best part of my life I did Hr Secondary part -1 in 1974 from Garli and thereafter left this school . I have met a few of my friends of those days but many have not met ever since.I have the greatest regards for the teachers who were extremely hard working and materialism had not touched their noble souls. I remember with great humility the "Suds" community who had raised this school and supported it . I also remember the great son of GARLI Lala Mela Ram Sud . Good to read about Late Sh. Kundan Lal Talwar Ji. I was never a student of Garli School but always respected and held the gentleman in very high esteem. He was not only a good teacher but a great REFORMER. We had a similar great personality in DAV High School, Shimla. The head master's name was Satya Prakash. We were given to understand that these contemporaries were school / college mates. Late Sh Talwar had obliged me by giving a special permission to play Cricket in MAIDAN with local school boys whenever I used to visit my meternal Uncle's house in Nagrota Nahan during our winter holidays.

Rakkar is about five-six kilometers by motor road from Garli via Sadwan. Frequent Bus service is available. Taxis are also readily available. During old times, we used to walk and take short cut to Sadwan and onwards. It was about forty five minutes walk on rough roads.

Atulji , I totally endorse your views that Garli has a Glorious History and it has been for a long time the main Centre of the Area .The honor of building Garli to it's Grand stature does go to Rai Bahadur Lala Mohan Lalji who laid out a palatial kothi, the largest in size and singular in design surrounded by fruit bearing gardens all around.I still remember the caretaker Sh Shamlalji the good old grand man who not only served and devotedly Looked after the estate also endeared himself with his eversmiling personality and loving nature. We as children looked upto him to taste mangoes of the garden.lot of memories of childhood....

Some very attractive houses & buildings of GARLI....First of all,boys school built almost a century ago. Then a couple houses belonging to Banta clan and then a beautiful house belonging to ancestors of Justice Sanjay Karol. There are other houses which now require immediate repair such as a cluster just adjacent to UCO bank (Houses of MITHOO family). Some of the houses which have been renovated have lost their original look in order to have modern amenities. A few of them still exist with original beauty in tact (Rai Bhahadur Mohan Lal's house being one among many of them)to project the marvellous status of this village... A WATER SUPPLY Scheme constructed almost hundred years ago by a private individual in course of his charitable activities

Hi myself Ram Parkash Sharma S/O Late Shri Jagdish Ram Sharma cloth merchant of Garli. I am a retired Income Tax Officer from Delhi Charge in 2009. I am into Delhi since last 45 years. I was born and brought up in Garli and completed my higher secondary in 1965 from Pragpur in Govt. Boys Higher secondary school. Although I am staying physically in Delhi for so many years but my soul still lies in Garli. I miss my childhood events which took place during my early stages in Garli. I can’t forget my peer group (my friends, my natives etc.). I am proud to be son of Himachal which we call as Devbhumi and of Garli which is known as Heritage village. It is indeed an heritage which includes old crafty work by architecture of that era that you can enjoy while visiting this place. Craft work includes old ancient buildings and the wooden work is just tremendous. Some of them likes UCO Bank building, Mela Ram Sood’s Old house, Judges court in Pragpur and a 100+ years old Talab. It is an heritage but it is into neglaction phase. It requires proper maintenance although on times maintenance work was started by Tourism Deptt. But because of lack of local support and some of the groupism activities by some local bodies it was delayed. Being from Garli I urge all local people and Govt. Institutions to look into the matter and personally and effectively take some serious action so that we can protect this heritage for our upcoming generation which they will value and this will ensure passage of it from generation to generation. Other point of concern is Government attitude towards heritage village. Whenever we talk about Heritage village it is called Garli Pragpur. But major benefits like Lohri Festival’s funds etc. are routed mainly to Pragpur. Garli has been totally ignored into this aspect. So this time some of youth of Garli took an initiative and they organized Lohri Festival in premises of Garli in which they invited Mr, Dhwala as chief guest. It was a moral lesson for Himachal Government. So I urge to arrange these sort of activities in the long run so that we can get what we deserve. I had spent all my summer school holidays in nagrota nahan , the place being my mother's native place. Day use to start with fetching water from wells or naun , the place had scarcity in summer , wait for malai-burf wala in after noon and a trip to garli could fetch us famous tikki-chat. The Late Nityanands shop in nagrota was also a piece of attarction as it sold Jawalamukhi peda's. Our maternal grandparents house was close to road " pandtan da beda " . Feels great to see garli figuring here.....

Mr Arvind Banta: The tikkies and Mallai Baraf seller was not Mir Chand. His name was Bir Chand. He had his 'factory' in Nagrota Nahan- 2Km downwards towards Chamba Pattan. The taste of Malai Baraf which I used to eat about sixty five years ago is almost the same when I happened to see a Malai Baraf seller selling it about four months ago. The seller happened to be a relative of the old seller. He gave me an impression that the young man was maternal grandson of Bir Chand. I make it a point to visit Nagrota Nahan every year which was the birth place of my mother and Go to Garli as well to have a peep in BANTA Bhawan which is the birth place of my wife although she lived,prior to her wedding, in Yamuna Nagar

Just noticed Mr A kumar Sud's (from Canada)Comments. Hari (A Kumar's mama Ji) was my classmate in School. He doesnot mean to put down pragpur. I think he was over enthusiastic to highlight our village Pirasaluhi.Mr.Kumar should see my comments dated 30.11.2009 on this page only. Pragpur still remains wonderful although Hari, like me, may be loving his own village more than any other place. Mr. Ak Sood should Please bear in mind when someone in Himachal taks about soods, it is a natural assumption when it is said that "SOOD FROM GARLI-PRAGPUR?" TAlking about soods naturally gives assumption that we are from GARLI or PRAGPUR. No other name is mentioned while taking about native places of soods to begin with. Is it not greatness of great village PRAGPUR.? I know even Hari will not differ that Pragpur is definitely Highiset up on pedastal. No offense to Garli people. Mr. Justice Sanjay Karol's village is equally wonderful and peaceful.

I have spent 17 years of my life in 1st heritage village of India and I love my village very much. My parents spent their whole lives in this village and no body has the right to put it down. A few days ago I was speaking to my sons and my cousin brothers in U.S.A about Hari Sood, my Mamaji, trying to put down our village with his history lesson. His insight is incorrect and he clearly needs to do his research before he writes further. Being a resident of Canada myself, and embracing its diversity, I would hope that Users of this forum take pride in their homeland and heritage and not insult it with meaningless, irrelevant opinions.

Hei! I am here again. Hari sood (Now in Canada) my DAV School, Shimla class 10 benchmate, is off target when he says Pirsaluhi (our village) has bigger mensions than that in Pragpur. The biggest here in Pirsaluhi (Haveli Wale's residence) would seem a tiny spot as compared to number of huge mensions in Pragpur and Garli. Thank God! This hopuse is MOSTLY in tact. Hari,s "JALAN WALE" is also no match to so many buildings in two heritage villages.I am not being humble but say the facts only. No body would differ with Hari and me that PIRSALUHI is on top of a hill and from few spots one can have 360 degree view of Distt. Kangra and part of Distt.Una / Hamirpur.--- Hari Am I right?. Once again I say, I LOVE my village very much.

I love my village the most but my visit to my native village seems incomplete without paying a visit to GARLI & PRAGPUR where I used to have lot of fun and enjoyment during my childhood and young days. Alas! no relatives can be found at these places now. YET I love to go to both these HERITAGE places and remember good old days and my good old relatives and friends. Garli is still PEACEFUL and Pragpur is WONDERFUL.

Hari K Sud (Canada) Pragpur in these writings has been incorrectly associated with Kuthiala clan. The latter have Haroli (Una district) as their place of influence. Pragpur has some of them but not in big numbers. They were "Kothi Wallahs" of the king of not Kangra but Jaswan State. Jaswan was a Jagir of Kangra closer to Hoshiarpur. This Jagir later became kingship and lasted 600 years. In 1819, the Maharaja Ranjit Singh forced the Jaswan king to resign his state because the Jaswan King disobeyed the Maharaja. British confirmed the resignation and merged the this state with Kangra in 1948. It was given a tehsil status for areas closer to Kangra as Tehsil Dehra Gopipur. Jaswan Dunn areas were merged to Una tehsil. Suds from plains had immigrated to Jaswan areas closer to Kangra. It happened in large numbers about 1760 to 1780. The Kothi Wallah or Kuthiala employee of Jaswan king had his job for 100 years prior. It was a heriditary job. Son took over after father passed away. It was thru the Kothi Wallah influence at Jaswan King's court that door was opened to Suds/Soods migration. They were running away from tyranny of Punjab. The king accepted the merchant immigrants with pleasure. A tract of land now called Pragpur was selected for settlement. Prag Devi or Prag Rani probably played a role in the settling the Sud/Sood community there. Prgpur's and all Sud town's prosperity began when in 1830, British built a rest and relief area in Shimla. Suds were invited to become merchants and suppliers for the British civil and military people who came there for rest during summer. Suds worked in Shimla and returned with pocket full of money. With this they built towns of Pragpur, Garli, Pirsaluhi, Rakkar and other Sud towns. That is when the water works in Pragpur was built i.e. 1850 (Butail Water Works). Latter water works are the result of other great personalities (like Rairoo Mull). Old stone building, some not all, are testment of Sud prosperity in Shimla. These were built from 1850 till 1920. By the latter date Suds were permanently settling in Shimla. Note: (Try to figure out your orgin not via internet but via the your family diary at Haridwar. Your Gotra is the key. The pundit will tell you that your Gotra is "Vaishya". Hence stop thinking about any Rajput origin or anyhting of sort. Suds in plains are Khatris. They may have some but tennous linkage to Rajput origin but not the hill suds. Hari Sud Toronto, Canada

Hey.. Im Priyanka,born in Pragpur in 1983.after spending about 4yrs,we moved to Dubai.i still have my extended family staying there,and i do visit them once in a few years.this site has taken me by surprise,but i guess im lucky to have found it!For me, goin back home is always a pleasure,no matter where we live,how we live..but home will always be special..shortage of electricity,water,not havin d best roads etc..all these petty things don't matter when it comes to walking down a road that uv probably walked when u wer 3..seeing those old shops,the bazaar,the talab,mandir,nadaun..every bit of home is heavan!! however,i would have still appreciated if all the pictures were colored..Pragpur is slow and laid back but a very lively and colorful place,rusty walls of the old forts,colorful houses,colorful temples,the trees and bushes..everything has a story to say..and taking away the colors is being unfair to nature and heritage..like many others i do strongly believe the government should take some serious measures to develop the place and promote tourism and make everyones visit to Pragpur- "an experience of a lifetime" take care all..

It is all fun remembring the childhood days ( 1970 - 1982 ) going to Garh during Summer holidays & visiting Chamba Pattan & going further up to Mata Jwala ji on foot from Garh, Walking right up to Chanour Thakurdwara / Bharoli via Rakkar & Kaloha with dadiji ( No many buses used to ply those days - as it is these days including private personal vehicals ). It is saddening to know that all natural Water Bodies + wonderful work done by Kuthialas ( at Pragpur Naun / Garh Taal + Nakki Khadd as early as 1933 ) have vanished in absence of any maintenance + lack of ownership. Things have changed a lot BUT still its wonderful remembring -- Amb Chhupna in this peak summer / early rains & many similar activities. Love you all. Jai Maata Di.

When i find ARVIND THAKUR my friend's village Garli on internet i feel glad.GARLI, CHAMBA PATTAN I crossed this road weekly when i was 10yr old because my mother was working at GHALOUR opposite side of garli i.e.opposite bank of BAUS RIVER. Let me introduce you to Garli.Garli is situated along the river Beas in distt Kangra. It was once a flourishing trade center under British rule. The houses here still give a glimps of olden days. It has a rare distinction of having a SANSKRIT VIDYAPEETH(Deemed University) managed by MHRD New Delhi.G.S.S.S.GARLI is one of the oldest school of Himachal Pradesh. Recently famous Bollywood star Rishi Kapoor visited garli for shooting a film Garli has one one of the oldest tample which is SADASHIV MAHADEV MANDIR situated in village Aloh (Garli).Whenever you visit garli,you must visit this tample.

There is a small amendment to what I had written earlier the late Vidya Wati was the daughter of Late Lakshmi Chand elder brother to the Late Dr Jaishi Ram. Late Chaudhri Mal was the father to both Jaishi Ram and Lakshmi Chand incidentally there was a third brother Sri Ram who was childless. A lot of filip to late Dr Jaishi Rams charitable work was given by the financial support from the business in Delhi being run by Lakshmi Chand and Sri Ram.

Hi Iam Arvind , please refer my earlier comments regarding the late Vidya Wati and her association with Vidya wati Niwas (one of the pics given above) and comments from Dr Manjula Sood. So here is something more about the late Vidya Wati. She happens to be the eldest child born in the house which is referred to as belonging to the late Dr Jaishi Ram. she probably spent her childhood here before being married and moving onto Pragpur/ Shimla. She was her father's only daughter (Late Chaudhri Mal elder brother to Dr Jaishi Ram)and as we have heard quite pampered being motherless. This house gave refuge to her children when her husband died early. One of those children was my mother Brij Mohini Sood. I also believe that this great house had its doors similarly opened for other relatives. So Dr Manjula when you do up the house do spare a small plaque or just a small thought in your mind for Vidya Wati and her clan for they represent the blood line of another illustrious gentleman of the family.

hi...dis is manoj sharma from pragpu,recently i'm workin' in itely, last month i reach in pragpur...it's too worse" i reach there 2:30mid night,i found avery where "darkness"no1 street light, the condition of "haritage villege pragpur" 1.too dirty' 2.in summer not water available there to take...., 3.bad road.... 4.no STD booth's in night times in short of word's the comment's or my side" there is no life for live. i requested 2the goverment of himachal perdesh to improve the condotion of d village..otherwise no one touriste come to visit......plz put som som steps to improve" ok thanks with regard,

The village is set to have been established in the seventeenth century by the Kuthiala sub-caste of the Sood community of the region. Traditionally, the Kuthialas were the treasure keepers of Kangra’s ruling house. The name ‘Pragpur’ is said to have been derived from Pragdevi or Pragrani, a lady who may have been connected with the ruling family of the tract. 'Prag' in Sanskrit also means pollen. Situated about 60 kilometers from Dharamsala, Pragpur, is located at an elevation of around 585 metres in the Kangra District. Recently we were in Garli Pragpur on a trip to see what is happening there . My parents came from Pragpur but my husband's grandparents lived in Garli. Dr. Jaishi Ram's name is still taken with great respect and reverence in these valleys for his charitable work and his proffession in medicine and the care he offered to many who could not afford. The house is now being renovated as to what it looked when Dr. Jaishi Ram and family including Dr. Rajinder Sood (his grandson and others used to visit the big house in summer vacations). Both of us are hoping that some day we will be able to bring this house alive and open some charitable foundation in Dr. Jaishi Rem's name so that the next generation will be able to carry his name forward and be able to go back to thier roots

hi iam arvind again, thanks web master for changing the name of the old building to vidya wati niwas as requested by me earlier. A word about the late vidya wati will not be out of place here. She was born in Garli somewhere between 1915 and 1920 to lakshmi chand and Vishnoo Devi. Having lost her mother early on she was raised by her Grandmother (who we are told thouroughly pampered her) and two of her aunts. She spent her childhood in the company of numerous cousins and friends who we later identified as a series of mamas and masis. None of them were her real brothers or sisters but the love and respect amongst them was something to experience. A lesson for us indeed. Later on life she got married to Babu Ram Banta of Pragpur and probably came as a young bride to the house shown as Vidyawati Niwas here on this site. She was widowed at the age of 28 with six daughters and an infant son. This is where God truly tested her. She refused to bow before relatives or the unrealistic condition put by them for support, instead she chose to stick on in Shimla and fend for herself. During her traivails she worked as a domestic help and for a long time as a eon in SD College Shimla. In due course her own children settled down and met their own destinies as ordained by God. Today she has 19 grandchildren and a few more great grandchildren as her legacy spread across India, England and Singapore. Vidya Wati house in some way reflects her life tragic , broken yet proud,tattered yet elegant. Some day perhaps the fortunes of this house will also turn as those of Vidya Wati and it will stand magnificent as it once was. Pragpur is a heitage village for not only its structures but also for the personalities that it produced.

I am born & brought up in New Delhi, however I have spent all my Childhood Summer Holidays ( from 1964 to 1986 ) at Pragpur. I was wonderful taking bath in village Pond at Garh, Naun, Grazing animals at Nakki, visiting Pragpur Bazaar -- eating Pakoras / Besan ( at Sadhuram Halwai shop ). We lost our father -- Mr. Mehar Chand Sharma last year & had great fond memories about his upbringing at this place. NO DOUBT Pragpur has changed a lot today, I wish I could still GO BACK TO my childhood days & meet old freinds like -- Kaala / Pappu / Bitto / Jolly / Pal / others. GO back to ploughing the fields / taking a joy ride on Buffaloes / have fun of watching the Bull fights etc.

hi I am Arvind Sood from Pragpur now settled you know wjere else but Shimla. The Old Building shown in this Photograph belongs (one floor) to my late mamaji Pradip Sood. I have heard numerous stories about this house which was home to nine brothers of the Banta clan. The house has had its share of sorrows and joys however the latter probably outweighed resulting in the owners moving out. I saw it during one of my visits and was immediately flooded with the many details of family history told to me by my granny. Henceforth please refer to this old building as Vidyawati Niwas who was a woman of grit and honour and whose story needs to be told .

Shri Karol's observation must not be taken lightly. Garli is not a sister village. It is THE Village. For centuries the area has been called Garli Pragpur, and all concerned should note this well. My Grandfather, Rai Bahadur Mohan Lal had a large hand in building the infrastructure of that village. It is not also a heritage, it is THE heritage.

I was absolutely delighted to see that Garli has been written about. It will therefore not be out of place to mention/add that the first School there formerly known as Sud Anglo Sanskrit High School was in fact funded & built by my late father Shri Mela Ram Sud. He managed the School for many many years even though he had settled down in Simla. Nevertheless, many a winter month were spent in Garli - a place that he was very very fond of. A portion of our Ancestral Home in Garli has for some considerable years now been rented out to The UCO Bank.

To put the history straight, with out intending to enter into a debate, garli is not a sister town. Garli has a glorius history and past with a main centre of the area at some point of time. kindly put Garli before Pragpur. SAnjay Karol
