WWII veteran recounts his story
A few days after the December 7, 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, 21 year old Charlie Mohrle volunteered for military service. At the end of WWII, Mohrle completed 97 combat missions, was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with 16 Oak Leaf Clusters, European Theater Ribbon with 4 battle Stars and is entitled to wear a Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon.

All those sound important but you have to visit the Flight Museum in Dallas and listen to him recollect his story as a WWII fighter pilot. It was more than 60 years ago but he remembers all the details as every war veteran I am sure would. At the end of his story I couldn't help but again close my eyes and pray for all the brave soldiers around the world fighting everyone else's war.

I just came into possession of a book that was at one time presented to Charlie on the 75th anniversary of the Dallas Hangar of the Quiet Birdmen, by his fellow pilots, as attested in the inscription by Dallas Hangar Keyman Bud England. The book is an autographed copy of "Attack on Yamamoto", by Carroll Glines, the 50th anniversary edition, 1993. If anyone is interested in obtaining this book, contact Travis at 940-391-9904.

Charlie: Haven't foun d time for another visit to the Museum, but I hope you are well and I'm wondering if you have seen the video that a friend sent me about a P-457 sortie over Germany. Maybe you were one of the pilots in that squadron. If you'd like to check it out, send me your e-mail address and I'll forward it.
Best regards,

Happened to be at the flight museum today with my 2 y.o. and 4 y.o. for a children's birthday party (my wife too). I walked over into the WWII section and Captain Mohrle was talking about his time in the war. He was fantastic! I sat mesmerized as he recounted his history of the war complete with original photo of American Military Cemetery in France. Took my 4 y.o. over to meet him and he's still talking about meeting the "brave and courageous" fighter pilot tonight at bed time. If you ever get over to the flight museum to hear him, it's well worth the time invested. Thanks Charlie! We all owe you a huge debt for your service and friends lost!
