Lake Point Tower
The building was designed by John Heinrich and George Schipporeit, who were both students of Mies
van der Rohe. The design for Lake Point Tower was partially derived from a sketch Mies van der Rohe
made in 1921. At the time of completion (1963) it was the tallest apartment complex in the world at
196m. It stands alone on Lake Michigan, exploting a loop hole that allowed for its construction on
the shore. The loop hole was then fixed. Famous people like Oprah Winfrey and Patrick Swayze stayed
here. The surface is curved so that no aprtment faces into another and also offering less surface
area to the wind, so close to the lake.
