The first governor born in the state, John Johnson (1861-1909) was also one of the most popular. Thousands of Minnesota citizens contributed $1 each for this first memorial on the capitol grounds. The four figures on the pedestal represent the state's early major industries: iron mining, agriculture, manufacturing and lumbering. See north side of statue base for more information.
