1949 Oldsmobile. Won NASCAR's first championship for Red Byron in 1949. The Rocket 88's shared the lighter body with Chevrolet and Pontiac while the 98 series was based on the Buick and Cadillac body platform. Olds put an overhead valve V-8 in this lighter body and tore up the Dirt Tracks of the South in NASCAR's early years. Domination had to be shared with the Hudson Hornet in 1951, 1952, 1953, and 1954, as these two cars were the dominate force in early NASCAR. Fonty Flock, Fireball Roberts, and Buck Baker, legends of NASCAR all drove Oldsmobiles similar to the one shown in this photograph.
