1955 Pontiac Star Chief Catalina Hardtop. The first year for V-8's at Pontiac. Straight Inline Eight Cylinder engines were Pontiac's mainstay powerplants prior to 1955. The Catalina name was first used to designate Pontiac's first pillarless hardtop coupe in 1950, but like Buick's Riviera Hardtop first introduced in 1949, and Chevy's Be-Air Hardtop introduced in 1950, eventually became a top of the line model series in its own right. Hardtop coupes became the most popular models in the Fifties, surpassing the tried and true family four door sedans. Today we have come full circle and the four door sedan reigns supreme once again as the most popular body style in terms of units sold.
