1964 Ford Fairlane Station Wagon. In 1962, Ford beat the competition out of the box with its new "intermediate" size Fairlane, the former series name used by standard sized Fords. The new intermediate Fords sold well, and Chevrolet countered in 1964 with the introduction of the new Chevelle. Other car lines soon followed with intermediates of their own. One of the most famous cars to be based on an intermediate platform was the Pontiac GTO, introduced in 1964 as a special performance model of the Pontiac Tempest.
