Saitama Prefecture's most significant tourist destination, Kawagoe is a small city that once manned one of the main northern routes out of Edo (modern Tōkyō). A rich merchant town in the Edo Period, it has managed to retain a fair chunk of its historic center, which is filled with row upon row of weathered machiya (wooden houses) and kura (earthen storehouses). Known for its sweet potato treats, the town also has a small pedestrianized street dedicated solely to confectionery shops: Kashiya Yokochō.
