Originally established by the Yokohama family, Fukuchiyama Castle was rebuilt in 1579-80 under Akechi Mitsuhide. Following the Battle of Sekigahara, the castle passed to Arima Toyōji who modernized and expanded it. As was the case across the country, Fukuchiyama-jō's structures were dismantled after the Meiji Restoration in 1872. The current donjon was reconstructed in 1986 and now hosts a local history museum.
