A hard work...

Fes (Morocco)

The Fes tannery is the oldest one in the world. It has more than 9 centuries of history.
The tannery is composed of numerous stone vessels filled with a vast range of dyes and various odorous liquids. The tannery processes the hides (skins) of sheep and goats, turning them into high quality leather products such as bags, coats, shoes, slippers and other similar products. This is all achieved manually, without the need for modern machinery. Men work in unbearably hot conditions (in the summer - 40 degrees and above). The tannery is a good example of mass production, a process that we often consider as being modern.

I love how the human element is in sharp contrast to the multiple geometric shapes. Nice work.

I keep coming back to this image. When we were in Fes, our hotel room overlooked a scene like this. In sheer amazement, I spend much time watching the men and fairly young boys work hard & long hours in the grueling heat.
You captured this scene so very well! Beautifully done shot!!! Very well composed.

I remember this so well. Nice thing about a picture is that you can't smell it. Nicely composed shot.

They are the real hardworking folk of our time! I saw in a film how they do it, it's fantastic that they work in such hot conditions. But I guess natural dyes are really good, it's like they did it many centuries ago, the technology and quality stays unchanged. I like the look of these old colour vessels, a nice shot Xavier and a nice story, very deserving to fit in a page of an international professions' galery :) V
