October 18, 2006 - The Plague is Back

Cloudy this morning with a few breaks of sun this afternoon. Temps around 70. I got a photo today of our plague here in West Virginia, the ladybugs. These bugs are not native to West Virginia, and have turned into a plague of almost biblical proportions. If you do not spray for them or otherwise have your house treated for them, you will deal with them all winter. They have a terrible odor and a lot of folks are allergic to the smell. (Note: As some have already commented, these are not true lady bugs but asian beetles. They look like lady bugs, but have nothing to do with good luck).

Fabulous macro. I don't know. After growing up with the nursery rhyme, I can't bring myself to kill them. :)

Great detail and reflection in this shot.
I did not know about the plague of the ladybugs in West Virginia.
I've always heard the superstition that they were good luck...
I guess you can have TOO MUCH good luck.

Excellent macro. I don't believe these are lady bugs per se; my understanding is that they're asian beetles and while look similar to lady bugs are actually a different species. I may be wrong about that--but whatever they are exactly they certainly are a pest!
