Kells Priory, Co. Kilkenny
Main entrance to Kells Priory
Augustinian priory of St Mary was founded c.1193 beside the King’s River at the edge of the medieval borough of Kells
Kells Priory is one of Ireland's most impressive monastic sites
The thick walls show that life was not always easy at Kells
Inside are the remains of an Augustinian abbey and the foundations of chapels and houses.
At present you are free to wander and explore as you wish at Kells Priory
On our visit we were the only two people there for most of the time.
Outside the walls near the King River
Stopping for a rest
Thick and fortified walls.
Kilree Monastic site is almost hidden in a ring of trees
It is situated just a few miles from Kells Priory.
The Round Tower at Kilree has a battlement style top
