The Great Wall of China at Juyong Guan (November 2005)
A chilly and very windy Saturday found me at the Great Wall of China at Juyong Guan (Juyong Pass). The terrain is much steeper than the 'flatter' section at Badaling, a few kilometers up the highway. Badaling has been fitted with a cable car for those 'out-of'shape' visitors wanting to go to the top. Juyong Guan has no such convenience; just steps, steps and more treacherous and uneven 'steps to the shy.' My traveling partner showed the benefits of his morning jogs; he made it all the way to the top. I just got to station 2, an worthy accomplishment, but 'no cigar.' (For the next visit I would pick a warmer day and a flatter venue.) All-in-all, a visit to the Wall is still an inspiring experience.
