The Sphinx sits in the valley below the Pyramid of Khephren (Cephren, Khafre) and is believed by many historians to have been ordered built by Khafre. The Sphinx is in direct line with Khafre's pyramid and sits adjacent to Khafre's Valley Temple. However, there is controversy among Egyptologists. More now believe that the Sphinx was actually ordered built by Khafre's father Pharaoh Khufu (a.k.a. Cheops).
