The dry season is the best time to visit northern Tanzania’s Tarangire Natl Park with its plains dotted with ancient baobab trees and herds of up to 300 elephants scratching the dry river bed for underground streams, while migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland crowd the shrinking lagoons. It’s the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem. The swamps, tinged green year round, are the focus for 550 bird varieties, the most breeding species in one habitat anywhere in the world. Close to Lake Manyara with its massive flocks of White Pelicans and Flamingos, Tarangire makes up in diversity what it missed in land mass size. Less touristed than some of Tanzania’s larger national parks, Tarangire is truly a special place.
