The British Virgin Islands, BVIs, are located in the northeast Caribbean just east of Puerto Rico. The islands are part of the Virgin Island archipelago which includes the US Virgin Islands and Spanish Virgin Islands. This self-governing British Overseas territory is made up of over 60 islands and cays most of which are uninhibited. Well known as a tourist destination these beautiful volcanic and coral islands attract sailors, fisherman as well as sun worshipers and beach seeking travelers. Nature is the main attraction in the islands, with coral reefs, white sandy beaches, and scenic seaside villages the main draw. The two larger main islands of Tortola and Virgin Gorda are home to several small towns, government, marinas and resorts. Other popular islands include Jost Van Dyke, Cooper island, Peter island and of course Norman Island home of the Willy T an old schooner now a well visited bar and restaurant. The British Virgin Islands with the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean to the south enjoy a tropical climate, moderated by trade winds. The BVIs are a sailor’s paradise with most islands within line of sight separated by deep crystal clear easily navigable waterways. One exception is Anegada off the beaten bath and surrounded by challenging shallow waters. Anegada aka the Drowned Island due to it’s low lying coral topography is known for it’s lobsters and gorgeous beaches. Over the years we have visited the BVIs many times aboard bareboat motor yachts, most recently we charted a yacht from Virgin Traders based out of Tortola. Enjoy a few of my images from this little piece of paradise.
