What kind of spider

As my pizza was being delivered it was getting dark out as I notice this spider literally hanging outside of my front door munching on his own delivery. I quickly grabbed my cam and mounted a 35mm macro on it and used the on-board flash. It's obvious by the size of his meal that it's a lot more ferocious then it looks! The bubble of it's back was about 3/8" of an inch in diameter and the whole spider was almost two inches overall. What kind of spider is this, is it harmless?

You're right Michael, it is a Black Widow spider. Not knowing that at the time, the 35mm macro lens was not the wisest lens to have at the time as the grasshopper carcass was hanging by a single strand of web and the wind was gusting blowing it into the front of the lens a couple of times.

I'm no entomologist but that looks like a 'Black Widow' spider to me and yes they're very dangerous.
