After nearly 50 years of service the Karuah bridge has affectively retired from the mainstream of traffic usage. Built in 1957 to replace the vehicular ferry crossing, the bridge bore large traffic volumes in the later part of the 20th century. Finally, in late 2004, the township and the crossing at Karuah were bypassed as part of a major upgrade of the route north of Sydney.
