Due to its exposed location Heligoland has been home to researchers for hundreds of years, most of them specializing in ornithology and marine biology. For their studies of the local lobster population the Alfred Wegener Institute built an artifical tidal basin- during "low tide" the water is pumped into this UFO-like tower, which remains one of the most recognizable buildings on the island
