The black pieces are the gears which translate the stick's sideways movement into an up-and-down- motion of the ailerons. Moving the stick forward and back moves the elevators. LEGO- enthusiasts call this arrangement "god-stick" since the steering is non-authentically relocated to the model's outside- in proper reach for the person handling the model
