The infamous Kiel Week (nowadays,a great place to get wasted in a fair-like setting) started out as a rather aristrocratic boat race. Emperor Wilhelm II (the guy in the painting) was a lover of all things nautical and sponsored this trophy with the likeness of his own yacht. Said yacht partook in the races, which must have been a dicey situation- nobody must beat the Emperor, but he wants a true race!
