In the 1930es it became a question of national prestige to claim the latest technological marvel- the biggest, most luxurious ocean liner, the fastest plane or the fastest car. Pilots and racecar drivers were heralded as heros. The Nazi-regime took this one step further and spent enormous amounts of money on R&D.
