In June 1967 the Shah of Iran and his wife visited West-Berlin as a part of their European tour. Many citizens, many of them students, demonstrated against what they deemed a dictatorship. Self-made masks like these were used as disguise. Things turned really foul when pro-Iranian-demonstrators moved in and started an attack, the police turned a blind eye. The events finally led to violent riots and ultimately to the formation of the RAF terrorist group
