Ghosts of the Prairie

Kansas was in the heart of homestead country in the late 1800's to early 1900's. People migrated from the east to settle on the Great Plains to try to make a living through agriculture, primarily growing wheat. This gallery shows the remnants of the once hundreds of limestone and wooden houses that were built by these hard working individuals, as well as other structures, schools, and other items of this time period. Most of these homes and structures are decaying and disappearing at a rapid rate and will be gone in another 10 yrs. The limestone for the houses usually was quarried locally out of limestone that was deposited during the Cretaceous period during which Kansas was covered with an inland sea.
