the lowly floor

So much happens under our feet while our eyes are looking up or out. Floors carry the footprints of all who have walked, rolled, crawled or sat there. Shadows paint their fleeting designs whether we notice them or not. We are grounded and supported by what is under our feet, or wheels in my case. I remember on a trip to Assisi in 1986 being so aware of the feet that had trod the paths I was taking. Perhaps it had been hundreds of years before, but the footprints remained. So today I pay homage to the lowly floor, our ever-dependable friend.

So beautifully designed. The patterns in the carpet are revealed to just the right degree and that one vertical highlight is the absolute perfect touch. This is just wonderful!

That's interesting how this image says a lot while showing very little. Good photography does that!

The context of your words and picture is remarkable Patricia. You enables us to discover the "hidden" things of life! It`s like the opening of a treasure chest!

Patricia, it's something I'm always so aware of, even walking in the forest.
What's gone before and will come in the tomorrows...
Beautiful shadows so nice in b&w.

While I value Phil's opinion and appreciate his request to see this image in color, I'd prefer to keep it in b&w. If I presented it in color I would be losing the intention I had in making this image in the first place. It is all about the lowly floor not the colorful Persian carpet upon which it rests. I would have been happier still if this shadow had fallen on our old scuffed hardwood floors, but it never will, at least not as long as our beloved carpet graces the living room floor. Sometimes the most beautiful and nostalgiac image is not what we're after. Sometimes stark simplicity is all we want. And so it is here.

To evoke a nostalgia, what role would color play here? Can you post this in color so we can see the differences in meaning. Thanks, Patricia.

this is a lovely thought - in Indian mythology or popular belief, such reverence is given to mother earth - the soil on which thousands have waled before us...
