Heavy rain showers moved through Detroit as the DEMF gates opened at noon. I waited until the worst was over before heading downtown to Hart Plaza. When I got there it was a bit chilly with a fine misty rain that looked like it was going to settle in for the day, but I knew enough to head right over to the Beatport Stage which was tented. Except for an hour or two over at the Main Stage later in the day, I pretty much hung out under the Beatport tent. And that was cool because I loved the DJs I was hearing there: people like classically-trained minimal techno DJ Sassmouth out of Chicago, St. Louis native DJ Butane who plays a great mix of "futuristic minimal techno", DJ Guido Schneider from Berlin, Germany who transported me with his "hypnotic, minimal and slamming techno", and San Franciscan DJ Claude Vonstroke who hammered home a mix of "melodic yet gritty techno-funk." BTW I have Detroit freelance techno reporter Tim Pratt to thank for these descriptions of the DJs' music. I would never have been able to describe it in words; I just knew I loved it!
