Monday at Detroit's Electronic Music Festival 2007

Monday, May 28, was the perfect day: the sun was bright but not too hot, the crowds were plentiful but very friendly, and the music was absolutely fabulous! I started out at the Pyramid Riverfront Stage where the dancing was hot and the DJs even hotter. Gritty is the word for what was happening there, or "ghetto house," as it's known in EM circles. After awhile it got a bit rough-edged even for my tastes, so I scooted down to the Main Stage which was as mellow as mellow could be. DJ Vladislay Delay from Finland was mixing trance with minimal techno to create quite a unique sound. I then stayed put for Damian Lazarus, a British DJ whose music got everyone up and moving, even those who had stayed up into the wee hours the night before at Detroit's many after-parties.

By now it was time for a bite to eat--there are food vendors all over the festival--so I got a Thai spring roll and parked my scooter on the grass beside the river. Happily, my friend Pat Kolon found me over there and we had a little visit. A bit later, while I was out and about taking photos, I ran into some of my new friends who told me not to miss Switzerland's Luciano who'd be playing the Beatport Stage in a half hour. I have no pictures of that performance but it was a complete and utter WOW!!! And Luciano was followed by EM icon, Detroiter Richie Hawtin, who was another WOW!!!

After three and a half hours--much of it up on my feet dancing--I was pretty much done in. After all, I'd already spent almost 30 hours movin' to the beat in the last three days! From then on I just scooted around the Hart Plaza, taking a few photos, occasionally getting up to dance, meeting new friends and saying goodbye to my "old" ones. At a little after midnight, Movement 07 came to a close. And now we have another year to wait for yet another electronic music extravaganza. Who knows? Maybe you'll come join us in '08!
