The Glenfinnan Viaduct is a railway viaduct on the West Highland Line in Glenfinnan, Inverness-shire, Scotland |
Located at the top of Loch Shiel in the West Highlands of Scotland, the viaduct overlooks the Glenfinnan Monument and Loch Shiel |
The longest concrete railway bridge in Scotland at 416 yards and crosses the River Finnan at a height of 100 feet |
The viaduct is built from mass concrete, and has 21 semicircular spans of 50 feet |
The Hogwarts Express, is filmed crossing the viaduct in several of the Harry Potter films |
The train filmed is the Jacobite Steam-Locomotive Train, a tourist train |
Glenfinnan is a hamlet in Lochaber area of the Highlands of Scotland |
In 1745 the Jacobite rising began here when Prince Charles Edward Stuart ("Bonnie Prince Charlie") |
raised his standard on the shores of Loch Shiel |
Eight months later, the Jacobite claim to the throne ended in failure at the Battle of Culloden |
Charles Stuart returned to the area after Culloden during his flight to evade the Government troopers of Prince William |
Taking refuge with loyal supporters, he boarded a French frigate on the shores of Loch nan Uamh |
The Young Pretender died in Rome in 1788 without setting foot on Scottish soil again |

Alexander Macdonald of Glenaladale, built a memorial tower at Glenfinnan to commemorate the raising of the standard by Charles |
The statue of an anonymous highlander, referred to at the point of commission as Charles Edward Stewart, was added in 1835 |
Jacobite enthusiasts gather at the tower each year on 19 August to remember the Rising of '45 |

Just after going under the Loch nan Uamh Viaduct(not pictured but would be to the left) lies the Prince's Cairn |
The Prince's Cairn marks the traditional spot from where Bonnie Prince Charlie embarked for France from Scotland in 1746 |
Loch nan Uamh is also where the Young Pretender first stepped ashore on mainland Great Britain in 1745 |
Marking both beginning & poignant end of one of the most intriguing & ultimately tragic tales in British history |

Castle Stalker(1320) in the Gaelic, Stalcaire, meaning Hunter or Falconer-situated on an island in Loch Linnhe |
Opened in 1705, The Drovers Inn is one of the oldest licensed premises in Scotland, located at the northern tip of Loch Lomond |
It takes its name from the Highland drovers who used to drive their cattle down the side of Loch Lomond to the markets |
One of the most famous drovers was Rob Roy MacGregor (1671-1734), the famous Scottish folk hero and outlaw |
With its 300 year history there have been many reported ghost sightings at this iconic place |
including the ghost of an ancient cattle drover who can sometimes be seen wandering the hallways late at night |
Drovers Inn greets it's visitors with worn antiques, old photos and paintings, and a huge collection of taxidermy |
Drovers Inn is featured as a location in the 2012 Halle Berry and Tom Hanks fantasy Cloud Atlas |

Loch Lomond 'Lake of the Elms' is a freshwater Scottish loch which crosses the Highland Boundary Fault |
The boundary between the lowlands of Central Scotland and the Highlands |
The Loch forms part of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park which was established in 2002 |
The loch is featured in a well-known song which was first published around 1841, The Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond |
By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes, |
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond, |
Where me and my true love were ever wont to gae, |
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond. |
O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low road, |
And I'll be in Scotland a'fore ye, |
But me and my true love will never meet again, |
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond. |
'Twas there that we parted, in yon shady glen, |
On the steep, steep side o' Ben Lomond, |
Where in soft purple hue, the highland hills we view, |
And the moon coming out in the gloaming. |
O braw Charlie Stewart, dear true, true heart, |
Wha could refuse thee protection, |
Like the weeping birk on the wild hillside, |
How graceful he looked in dejection |
The wee birdies sing and the wildflowers spring, |
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping. |
But the broken heart it kens nae second spring again, |
Though the waeful may cease frae their grieving. |
The original author is unknown. |
One story is that during the Jacobite rising a soldier on his way back to Scotland in retreat from England wrote the song |
The "low road" may be a reference to the Celtic belief that if someone died away from his homeland, |
then the fairies would provide a route of this name for his soul to return home |
Within this theory, it is possible that the soldier awaiting death may have been writing |
either to a friend who was allowed to live and return home, |
or to a lover back in Scotland. |
